Our client Walsall Council are looking for a Communication Officer.

Service Area: Assurance Team
Section: Information, Communications & Technologies
Salary: £13.51 – £15.66 per hour

PURPOSE OF JOB:
Together with excellent communications delivery skills, the post-holder will have a wide ranging knowledge and awareness of the Council in order to deliver an effective corporate communications service. You will have experience and an understanding of the following:

  • The council’s vision and values to ensure media messages are aligned to these aspirations
  • Taking appropriate communication action to reduce the risk of damaging reputation
  • Delivery of communications and engagement activities that would support both statutory and service level consultations.
  • The democratic process including the current political agenda and council priorities
  • The wide range of council services and the issues and challenges facing the authority
  • Significant business change activity planned and underway
  • The Council’s broad range of residents, businesses, partners and stakeholders
  • The importance of internal communications to employees
  • Developing effective communications messages using the most appropriate communications media
  • Measuring the effectiveness of the communication which is being delivered.

Skills/Abilities:

  • Excellent communications skills to support the effective delivery of (internal and external) communication services on behalf of the council.
  • Excellent written and verbal skills across a broad range of areas, including compilation of press releases, internal reports, campaign materials, case studies, newsletters, briefing materials, website and social media content.
  • Ability to develop effective high quality communication messages using the most appropriate media.
  • Awareness of using communications to reduce our reputation’s risk in a political environment.
  • Wide ranging knowledge and awareness of the Council, our services and the issues and challenges facing the authority.
  • Knowledge and awareness of the range of communities we serve including residents, businesses, partners and stakeholders.
  • Liaise with and respond to all types of external media enquiries (newspapers, television, radio), developing press releases and information for internal and external publications, supporting communication planning and the publishing of information via the councils own media channels and also local and national media.
  • Experience of publishing content on a range of digital media channels.
  • Provide support, advice and guidance to managers across the council to assist the development of their communications plans, campaigns, messages and channel selection.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.The ability to work effectively in a team environment but also independently with minimum supervision, possessing good planning and time management skills.

Experience:

  • Experience of supporting the delivery of consultations and their media planning through the effective deliver of content making use of the appropriate communications channels
  • Excellent writing skills across a broad range of areas, including compilation of press releases, internal reports, campaign materials, case studies, newsletters, briefing materials, website and social media content.
  • Substantial relevant experience working in the field of communications in a public sector, customer service environment and ability to demonstrate

Qualification:

Protecting Information Training levels 1 and 2

Good standard of written and spoken English to minimum of GCSE level or
equivalent.
